Earth Mother
One of my friends very kindly commented that she didn't think she would be such a 'calm earth mother' when her time came to take on the mother role. I reassured her otherwise of course - she'll be wonderful. After she left I found myself reflecting on the way that her slip of the tongue - 'earth mother' is such a suitable phrase to describe what I aspire to be to my child(ren), and the phrase has stuck with me since.
It's a very good alternative to 'hippy/hippie' and is not so widely used and therefore not as easily misunderstood or stereotyped. To me it means working with our external and internal worlds; being as conscious of our parenting as we possibly can to give the best to our kids.
Everybody has within them a knowing of the best way to bring up their children for them, and for their children - it's different for everybody. Tapping into that fountain of built in knowledge is so important it the face of external teachings and criticism... we need to tap into ourselves and say (how) does this apply to me, to my children? Even if advice or an example logically makes sense, our intuition may advise a different route/style/choice.
In the end we are the ones who live with these decisions and their consequences so they have to be right for us.
Here I will reflect on some of my experiences and feelings as a parent in this crazy modern world. I hope reading about some of these subjects will help you decide what is right for you - if you find that you feel resistant to ideas you know they're not for you. If they appeal to you maybe try them out! Or just come to learn about how I did it - maybe there'll be some useful new ideas in there for you. Perhaps you will read something and see that "it's not just you", and find some solace as a result.... I keep my fingers crossed that it helps someone in some way
